BBI JU: driving impact and shaping Europe’s bio-based future

As Europe advances its  Bioeconomy Strategy, the promise of the biobased sector is becoming more evident than ever – not only through the value already created, but through the vast opportunities still ahead.

A newly released publication reflects on the lasting contribution of the Bio-Based Industries Joint Undertaking (BBI JU), which laid the groundwork for today’s Circular Bio-based Europe Joint Undertaking (CBE JU).

Over its lifetime, BBI JU channelled €822 million in EU funding and helped unlock a further €2.6 billion in investments. This support enabled 138 projects and brought together more than 1,100 organisations across the continent.

Highlights from the programme include:

  • Development of 106 innovative bio-based products.
  • Improvement of 92 industrial processes.
  • Creation of 156 new value chains.
  • Strong participation from SMEs and major advances in renewable materials.

These results underline the dedication of the bio-based community and set a strong foundation for accelerating Europe’s transition toward a sustainable, circular bioeconomy.
